SDN RJ45 connection

Post by brian » Tue Jun 07, 2016 10:38 am

I have 7 Somfy Sonese ST-30 motors connected to two 5-motor power communications panels. Basically this just provides distribution of the RS-485 and power to all the devices using standard 8-pin RJ45 (EIA/TIA 568B) Ethernet cables. Very convenient. I assumed (erroneously) that the RJ-45 connector on the XN200 was wired the same way, i.e.:

1-data+
2-data-
3-NC
4-power+
5-power+
6-NC
7-ground/power-
8-ground/power-

But a continuity check shows that the RJ-45 connector is not connected to the relevant signals on the 8-wire terminal block.

Opening up the XN200 I discover that the RJ-45 connector does indeed have pads for connections. I can add small jumper wires from these pads to the corresponding pads on the terminal block. If I do this am I going to damage the XN200 or void my warranty? Of course I can create a custom cable but would prefer to leave everything plug-in using standard cables if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your post. Any modification of the device will void the warranty and cannot be recommended. We appreciate your feedback about the desire for a standard RJ45 connection.

Thanks

Well, since this device is specific to Somfy blind-motors, and since Somfy has an RJ45 connection standard, it stands to reason that it would make sense to use it. You thought to put the RJ45 connector on the board so you must have been thinking about this.

Thanks for your feedback. This board is used in multiple products/configurations and the RJ45 port was designed for other interfaces. But we will make a note to try and support this in future hardware revisions.
